Hieracosphinx (Falcon-headed lion-bodied mythical creature)

For today's Sketch Dailies the subject is a hieracosphinx (yeah, I had no idea what it was either.) It's supposed to be a falcon-headed creature, but trying to draw falcon faces from reference photos wasn't turning out so great. Instead, I chose to draw Sam (the) Eagle's noble head.

Princess Leia

One of this week's Sketch Dailies themes was Princess Leia who is a badass babe. Haven't had much energy to draw lately but wanted to play with my new set of Photoshop brushes made by Kyle T Webster. I got his megapack a while ago and just bought his new mini set of gouache brushes (that I didn't end up using for this particular drawing). I'm trying to draw in Photoshop more, I used to only draw in Corel Painter. Still getting used to it..

HODOR.

For the upcoming Picture's Worth a Thousand Words show at Ltd. art gallery in Seattle, I drew Hodor, Bran and his direwolf Summer (and the three-eyed crow) from George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones series.

Ramona

HelloGiggles & Gallery 1988 Present: Young Adult

I'm very excited to be a part of the upcoming Young Adult show at Gallery 1988 Melrose opening Feb 2nd in Los Angeles. Gallery 1988 collaborated with the website hellogiggles (an online community for women founded by Zooey Deschanel, Molly McAleer and Sophia Rossi) on this show themed around young adult book series such as Nancy Drew, Sweet Valley High and the Baby Sitters Club (my personal third-grade favorite). 

I decided to draw the four original members of the BSC (Kristy, Claudia, Stacey, and Mary Anne) and created 9x12" stretched canvas prints of the individual girls and an 11x17" giclee print of all four together (signed & numbered limited run of 20!)

In the last couple weeks, Nate and I devoured the first three seasons of Sons of Anarchy. I love Ron Perlman's odd face!

DIY Totoro cards.

We've been on a Totoro kick lately, and the latest installment is this set of 4 printable Totoro holiday cards. They're up in our Etsy shop. Once you purchase the PDF, you can print as many as you like! Keep them for yourself, or give out to friends, or print up a set of 10 for a great gift. There are four different colors included, so you can mix and match. Each card template even has lots of helpful tips for the DIYer, like, "CUT HERE" and "FOLD HERE." And just a tip, folding works best if you either crease or score the fold line a bit. Makes for a much cleaner fold. 

They measure 5.5 x 4" and should fit most medium envelopes (not included).



I'm finishing up some linocut prints of the same illustration. Except these are limited edition, hand-carved and hand-printed cards. I only have the hats to print and then I'll post pics. I really like how they came out, the ink has a mind of its own. Pretty much the opposite of computer-drawn work. Except it started on the computer. Which makes me like it even more. I'm big on that whole computer/handmade/mush-em-all-together thing, if you haven't noticed.

Totoro!

I'm trying to get back into the habit of drawing outside of work, so I decided to make a few illustrations inspired by one of my favorite movies, My Neighbor Totoro by Hayao Miyazaki. I also might have gotten a little distracted from drawing by all the cute Totoro merchandise for sale on the web.

Had some fun in packaging land today, and now we've got Happy Cake Stamp, Sad Cake Stamp, Grumpy Cake Stamp and Owl Cake Stamp all packaged up, listed on etsy, and ready to go.



I've been playing with embossing powder for a lot of the printing on the header cards. I'm liking it lots. The stuff we originally got was kind of coarse, so today we went out and got some extra fine powder. More on how that turns out later.

Unfortunately, Owl Cake Stamp was too large for the regular poly bags, and so we had to use a larger one that doesn't quite fit into the header card's width, and I had to fold it a bit. I'm going to try to find some better-fitting bags for future stamps of that size (2.5" square). Anyone know where I can get some?


Also, last night I made pie.
